NSIC Release
ST. CLOUD, MINN. – The St. Cloud State volleyball team showed tremendous progress during the 2017 season. The Huskies won 16 games overall and earned eight wins in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) play to finish the year in 11th place in the conference standings. This season, St. Cloud State looks to keep pace in the conference standings, as the team was picked to finish 11th in the NSIC volleyball preseason poll, the conference office announced Tuesday morning.
The Huskies have shown steady improvement since current head coach Chad Braegelmann took over the program in 2015. In 2017, Braegglemann led St. Cloud State to its most successful season in recent history, helping the Huskies post on overall record of 16-14 and go 8-12 in NSIC play. Leading the way for St. Cloud State was libero Clara Krenz (Oakdale, Minn. / North St. Paul), who earned All-NSIC Second Team honors for her play in 2017. The current junior became the first Husky to earn All-Conference honors since 2015, and did it in resounding fashion, leading the NSIC in both digs (628) and digs/set (5.92) at the end of the regular season. Krenz' 628 digs during the season also finished second in St. Cloud State's all-time single season digs list.
Offensively, the Huskies will look to middle blocker Micah Nier (Hatley, Wis. / Wittenberg-Birnamwood) and right-side hitter Krista Kuglin (Minnetonka, Minn. / Minnetonka), both of whom are seniors. St. Cloud State also welcomes eight new faces to the team, including Miss. Baden finalist Linsey Rachel (Maple Lake, Minn. / Maple Lake) along with fellow Minnesota All-State honorees Madison Hucky (Waconia, Minn. / Mayer Lutheran) and Rachel Houle (Stillwater, Minn. / Stillwater).
The Huskies will open the season on August 23, when they take on the University of Hawaii-Hilo in the First Hawaiin Bank Volleyball Challenge in Hilo, Hawaii. St. Cloud State's first home match will occur on September 6, when the team hosts the University of Minnesota-Crookston at 6 p.m. in Halenbeck Hall. Tickets can be purchased at the door the day of matches.
