St. Cloud State's five-run sixth inning was all SCSU needed to pair with Dom Austing's 8.2 inning, three-hit performance.
MAGNOLIA, Ark. - In a back-and-forth pitcher's duel that featured both team's aces, the #6 seeded St. Cloud State baseball team prevailed over #3 seed, Central Oklahoma in a 5-2 finish on Thursday, May 17th. The Huskies collected their 30th win of the season behind a phenomenal start from Dominic Austing. The junior went 8.2 strong innings and carried a no-hitter through 5.2 innings. Austing improved to 7-1 on the year and tied his career-high of 12 strikeouts against the Bronchos, which ties him at seventh in program history for strikeouts in a game. Sheldon Miks sealed the save for SCSU by relieving Austing for the last out of the ball game with a strikeout.Â
SCSUÂ out-hit the Bronchos, 7-4 and recorded all five of their runs in the sixth inning. UCO would respond with one run in the sixth and scratch across their second run in the bottom of the ninth.Â
Jordan Joseph and Caeden Harris each collected two hits while Bo Schmitz, Mathew Meyer and Jackson Goplen accounted for the other three SCSU hits.Â
Joseph's single up the middle in the sixth sparked the Huskies' big inning. Following Joseph's single, Mitch Mallek drew a walk then Meyer doubled home Joseph to give SCSU a 1-0 lead.Â
Jackson Goplen would come up with one away and singled up the middle on the first pitch he saw to score Mallek and advance Meyer to third. Isaac Matchinsky would have a selfless at-bat and record a sacrifice fly to score Meyer from third to put SCSU up 3-0. With Goplen still on-base, the Bronchos would make a call to the bullpen to face junior left-fielder, Caeden Harris. On the first pitch Harris saw, he sent a two-run homer into deep left center field to put the Huskies up 5-0.Â
UCO would put one runner on with a walk in the sixth that would eventually score on a double to right field. The Bronchos' second run came in the bottom of the ninth through a pair of singles to put the score at 5-2.Â
St. Cloud State will move onto the next round of the NCAA Central Region tournament and face the #2 seed, Central Missouri at 8:30 PM on Friday night. The Mules won their first round match-up, 10-2 over #7 seed, Oklahoma Baptist in the game prior to SCSU's on Thursday night.Â
