Volleyball Falls In Three Sets To No. 1 Southwest Minnesota State On Friday Night

Marshall, Minn. – The St. Cloud State volleyball team (10-5, 3-3 NSIC) faced off with their fourth ranked team in as many matches and fell in three sets to currently top ranked nationally team Southwest Minnesota State (14-0, 6-0 NSIC) on Friday evening at the PE Gym. The set scores were 25-18, 25-15 and 25-19.
Senior Nicole Miller tied for the team lead with eight kills. Miller also picked up seven digs. Junior Krista Kuglin also had eight kills while hitting an impressive .316. Freshman Maddy Torve led the team in assists for the first time this season with 15. Sophomore Clara Krenz, the reigning defensive player of the week in the league, totaled 15 digs. Freshman Taylor Olstad had seven digs. Senior Kayla Crane recorded two service aces. The Huskies recorded 26 kills on 98 attempts for a .098 hitting percentage. The program also had 25 assists, three service aces and 37 digs.
Southwest Minnesota State put three players in double figures in kills on the evening led by Taylor Reiss' 12 kills. She also had six digs while hitting .385 from the floor. Brooke Borchardt had a match-high 13 kills while hitting .522. Sarina Smith recorded 11 kills. Kaylee Burnmeister picked up nine kills and 13 digs. Payton Hjerleid recorded three service aces. Dani Porter had eight digs. Megan Larson recorded 42 assists. The Mustangs had 47 kills in the three games while hitting .317 with 44 assists, six service aces, 48 digs and nine blocks.
Redshirt freshman Abby Templin, who had five kills on the day, led the team in the first game with two kills in the 25-18 loss. Kuglin also had a pair of kills in the opening set for SCSU.
Kuglin recorded four kills in five swings in the second game in the 25-15 setback.
Miller totaled four kills and two digs in the third set. After getting down by as much as seven in the third set, SCSU fought back to make it just a four-point contest on the block assists from Templin and Abol Barnaba, 22-18, to force a SMSU timeout. The Mustangs rallied and went on a 3-1 run to finish off the set and take the match.
The St. Cloud State volleyball team keep the road trip going and heads to Sioux Falls for a 2 p.m. match on Saturday, Sept. 30 at 2 p.m. The program has one more road match early next week against Bemidji State on Tuesday, Oct. 3, at 6 p.m. before returning home next weekend to host Concordia-St. Paul on Friday, Oct. 6 at 6 p.m. at Halenbeck Hall and Minnesota State on Saturday, Oct. 7, at 11 a.m.
