Volleyball Earns 3-1 Victory Over Bemidji State in First NSIC Match of Season

St. Cloud, Minn. – Senior Becca Gruber totaled a career-high 16 kills to lead the St. Cloud State volleyball team (8-2, 1-0 NSIC) to a 3-1 victory over Bemidji State (3-6, 0-1 NSIC) on Thursday, Sept. 14, in the conference opener for both teams. The Huskies earned wins in the first, third and fourth sets by scores of 25-16, 25-11 and 25-23. The program lost the second set by a close 25-21 count. The program has now equaled the win total for the entire 2016 season.
Gruber totaled 16 kills on 31 swings with only four errors for a .387 hitting percentage. Junior Micah Nier recorded 11 kills and hit .526 for the match. She also picked up two solo blocks, two block assists and two service aces. Fellow junior Krista Kuglin recorded eight kills and three block assists. Senior Kayla Crane led the team with her 26 assists plus four digs. Freshman Maddy Torve picked up 23 assists plus two service aces. Redshirt freshman Abby Templin total nine kills and four digs. Senior Nicole Miller tallied nine kills, three service aces and 11 digs. Sophomore Clara Krenz recorded 18 digs and a pair of service aces. The program hit .196 for the match with 59 kills, 57 assists, 10 service aces and 51 digs.
The Huskies won the first set 25-16 and had an 11-3 run to end the set to earn the victory. Gruber recorded three kills in that stretch.
SCSU fell in the second set by 25-21 count, but rallied from five points down to get to within two points before falling.
The Huskies earned the win in the third set 25-11 with Nier and Gruber each recording four kills in the set.
SCSU finished off the match with a close 25-23 victory in the fourth set. The set was close throughout and saw nine tied scores. Nicole Miller recorded five kills in the final set to lead the team to the match victory.
The St. Cloud State volleyball team continues play in the NSIC and travels to Minnesota Crookston on Saturday, Sept. 16, for a 4 p.m. match.
