St. Joseph, Minn.  – Incoming St. Cloud State freshman volleyball player Erin Navratil took home a pair of awards at the second annual Times Media Sports Awards on Wednesday, June 21, on the campus of the College of St. Benedict in St. Joseph, Minn.
Navratil was first named the Girls Basketball Player of the Year and then awarded as the overall Girls Athlete of the Year during the ceremony.
Navratil is an incoming freshman outside hitter from Albany, Minn. where she attended Albany High School. She played both basketball and volleyball while a member of the Huskies. She accomplished the rare feat of totaling over 1,000 career kills in volleyball and scoring more than 1,000 points on the basketball court.
"Erin was an extremely gifted high school athlete who was planning on playing college basketball early in her high school career before deciding to pursue collegiate volleyball," explained head coach Chad Braegelmann. "We are ecstatic that she chose volleyball and excited to be in working with her in the fall and see how she progresses." Â
Also taking home an individual honor at the Times Media Sports Awards was incoming SCSU baseball pitching recruit Trevor Koenig from St. Cloud Tech, who was named the Baseball Player of the Year. Koenig was drafted in the 40th round by the Milwaukee Brewers in last week's MLB Draft.
The Huskies volleyball team will kick off their 2017 season action on Aug. 31 when they play Saint Katherine College in San Marcos, California at 5 p.m. The SCSU home opener is on Sept. 14 at 6 p.m. against NSIC rival Bemidji State.
SCSU went 8-21 last season including a mark of 3-17 in NSIC play. The team fought hard and had four five-set losses last season in the second campaign under Coach Braegelmann. This season the program returns senior Nicole Miller, who led the team and ranked third in the conference with 45 service aces in 2016. Â The team also brings back junior Micah Nier, who ranked third on the squad with her 155 kills and 185.5 points last season.
