Freshman goaltender enjoyed a standout, record-setting rookie campaign for the Huskies
ST. CLOUD—After a standout freshman season, which put her name near the top of the single season program record book, St. Cloud State women's hockey goaltender Janine Alder was named to the 2017 WCHA All-Rookie team, the conference announced Thursday.
The Zurich, Switzerland native set the standard for SCSU freshman goaltenders, notching nine wins, a 2.55 goals-against average, a .926 save percentage and three shutouts. Alder's goals-against average and save percentage ranked third and fourth, respectively for a single season in program history. Her three shutouts were tied for the most, all-time, in a single season in team history and she was the first goaltender to record multiple clean sheets in her rookie campaign.
"We are very proud of Janine for earning this honor. She is very deserving," head coach Eric Rud said. "Her poise and calmness in the net had a great influence on our team this season. Every time she was between the pipes she gave us a chance to win."
Alder averaged 29.26 saves in 31 games played and boasted 15 30-plus save efforts, including a remarkable 59-stop outing at No. 1 Wisconsin on January 14.
She is the 16th Husky to capture All-WCHA honors and the fourth to be named to the All-Rookie team. This marks the second-straight season the Huskies have placed a player on the rookie team, following forward Julia Tylke's selection in 2016, and is the first time the they've had All-WCHA honorees in back-to-back seasons since St. Jacques (third team), Hailey Clarkson (third team) and Kristy Oonincx (second team) in 2006 and Holly Roberts (rookie) in 2007.
In addition to recognizing Alder, a record 15 Huskies were named to the 2016-17 WCHA All-Academic team: forwards Ivy Dynek, Alyssa Erickson, Lauren Hespenheide, Suvi Ollikainen, Payge Pena, Hannah Potrykus, Kelsey Saelens and Julia Tylke; defensemen Brittney Anderson, Caroline Markstrom, Christa Moody, Jenna Redford and Emma Turbyville; and goaltenders Taylor Crosby and Madeleine Dahl.
Fifteen is the most student athletes St. Cloud State has qualified for the all-academic team in program history.
To qualify, players must have completed at least one year at their present institution prior to the current year and have a grade point average of at least 3.00 for the previous two semesters or if they have maintained a 3.00 GPA for all terms.
