Minot State Surges Past Women’s Basketball, 61-58

Minot, N.D. – Despite getting a career-high 22 points from freshman Tori Wortz, the St. Cloud State women's basketball team (6-4, 3-3 NSIC) could not withstand a fourth quarter rally from Minot State (5-6, 2-5 NSIC) in a 61-58 loss to the Beavers at the Minot State Dome on Saturday, Dec. 30.
The 22 points from Wortz bettered her previous high of 18 points scored in the season opener against Valley City State University. In the contest against the Beavers, Wortz shot an efficient 6-for-10 from the field, 4-for-7 from three-point range and 6-for-8 from the free throw line. She also had five rebounds, a steal and a block. Senior Andrea Thomas also reached double figures with 12 points. She also totaled a pair of steals. Fellow senior Amanda Christianson also totaled 12 points and a pair of steals. Redshirt junior Mackenzie Uter led the team with her four assists plus had a pair of steals.
Minot State put three players in double figures and were led by 18 points from Holly Johnson. Johnson also recorded seven rebounds and a pair of steals. Madison Wald totaled 15 points, five rebounds and a pair of steals. Kristal Flowers recorded 13 points, eight rebounds, two blocks and two steals.
The Huskies shot 36.7 percent from the field (18-for-49), 41.7 percent from three-point range (10-for-24) and 75 percent from the line (12-for-16). Minot State shot 48.8 percent from the field (21-for-43), 23.5 percent from three-point range (4-for-17) and 68.2 percent from the free throw line (15-for-22). SCSU was outrebounded 33-28 in the contest.
The Huskies held a 35-26 lead at the half and led 52-41 after three quarters, but were outscored 20-6 in the final 10 minutes of action. The program only made two field goals and shot 16.7 percent in the fourth quarter. The team held the lead for 26:14 in the game. The program's last lead was 57-56, but a three-pointer from Diondra Denton gave the Beavers a 59-57 lead with 1:06 remaining in the contest that they would not relinquish with SCSU turning the ball over twice and missing a three three-pointers in the final two minutes.
The St. Cloud State women's basketball team continues the road swing and plays against the University of Mary on Sunday, Dec. 31, at 2 p.m.
Notes:
- This was the third game this season that Tori Wortz had led the team in scoring as she scored 22 against the Beavers, but the first since Nov. 18.
