Burnsville, Minn. – St. Cloud State's Clara Krenz has been named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday afternoon, Nov. 6.
Krenz led the NSIC last week with her average of 6.17 digs per set. She recorded a total of 74 digs including 33 against No. 2 Southwest Minnesota State. Krenz has five matches this season with more than 30 digs with a high of 33 against Upper Iowa (10/13), University of Mary (10/20) and Southwest Minnesota State (11/4).
This is the second time this season that Krenz has taken home the NSIC Defensive Player of the Week (DPOW) honors as she was also named the DPOW on Sept. 25.
She leads the NSIC in both digs (596) and digs per set (5.96). Her 596 digs are the second-most in a single season in school history and only 82 from reaching Andreanna Pieper (2007) for the top spot. Krenz also surpassed 1,000 career digs in her career this weekend with 1,043 in her two years in a volleyball uniform. That number is the seventh-most in school history and only 61 from reaching Megan Hardy (2004-06) for sixth.
Krenz also leads the team and is placed ninth in the conference with her 32 service aces this season.
The SCSU volleyball program (16-12, 8-10 NSIC) finishes up the 2017 campaign with road matches against No. 22 Wayne State College on Friday, Nov. 10, at 6 p.m. and against No. 16 Augustana on Saturday, Nov. 11, at 2 p.m. The team's 16 wins this season are only the third time in the last 20 years that the program has won 15 or more matches in a season.
