Women’s Basketball Falls 58-55 to Washburn University on Friday Night

Topeka, Kansas – The St. Cloud State women's basketball team (2-1) lost the program's first game of the season by a 58-55 score to Washburn University (5-0) on Friday night, Nov. 24, at Lee Arena in Topeka, Kan. on the first day of the Parrish Hotels Thanksgiving Classic.
Redshirt junior Mallie Doucette led the team with her 18 points. She also had four assists, three rebounds and two steals. Senior Andrea Thomas totaled 15 points, three rebounds and three assists. Senior Amanda Christianson also reached double figures with 12 points, seven rebounds and a steal. Sophomore Jocelyn Johnson picked up five rebounds for the team off the bench. The Huskies shot 34.6 percent from the field (18-for-52), 34.6 percent from three-point range (9-for-26) and 58.8 percent from the free throw line (10-for-17).
The Icabods were led by Regan Phelan's 16 points, four rebounds and three steals. Mackenzie Loe had 10 points and two steals. Alexis McAfee picked up nine points, seven rebounds and three steals. Hunter Bentley had eight points.
Washburn shot 38.3 percent from the field (18-for-47) and 60 percent from the free throw line (21-for-35). The Huskies were able to limit WU to just 4.8 percent shooting from beyond the arc (1-for-21) though.
The Huskies led at the half 28-22, but were outscored in the final 20 minutes 36-27. SCSU's largest lead was 10 points after a made three-pointer from Christianson at the 8:45 mark of the third quarter to make the score 40-30. WU then went on a 15-2 run to take the lead for good at the 7:16 mark of the fourth quarter, 45-42. Washburn's largest lead was six points, 53-47, on a made free throw from Denisha Smith.
St. Cloud State women's basketball team continues play in the Parrish Hotels Thanksgiving Classic in Topeka, Kansas against Newman University on Saturday, Nov. 25, at 1 p.m.
