St. Cloud, Minn. – The St. Cloud State volleyball team (11-7, 3-5 NSIC) put up a fight, but fell to No. 2 nationally ranked Concordia-St. Paul (15-1, 8-0 NSIC) on Friday night, Oct. 6, at Halenbeck Hall. The team fell in three sets by scores of 25-15, 25-10 and 25-19.
Seniors Nicole Miller and Becca Gruber tied for the team lead with six kills each. Redshirt freshman Abby Templin totaled five kills while hitting .308. Junior Krista Kuglin recorded four kills. Freshman Taylor Olstad led the team with her eight digs. Sophomore Clara Krenz picked up seven digs. Senior Kayla Crane led the squad with her 11 assists. Freshman Maddy Torve picked up 10 helpers. CSP was led by 15 kills from Brooklyn Lewis. Lewis also hit .345 for the match. Sydney Book had 11 kills while hitting .714. Shelby Seurer and Hope Schiller both had eight kills. Elizabeth Mohr recorded 45 assists. Erin Fallert picked up three service aces. The Golden Bears totaled 49 kills, .451 hitting percentage, 48 assists, 53 digs, seven service aces and four blocks.
In the first set, Templin led the team with her four kills. The team also hit .212.
The second set saw Gruber and Mulso each record a pair of kills to lead the squad.
The third set found the Huskies down by a 20-13 score, but the team fought back to get to within five on the service ace from Miller, 24-19, before CSP closed out the set and the match on the Book kill. Miller led the team with her three kills in the set.
"There are many reasons why they have won eight national championships," head coach Chad Braegelmann explained. "They have extremely good ball control, they are very low error, and they put a lot of pressure on you when they're swinging on offense. Our blockers and defense and discipline struggled tonight as did our serve-receive. I thought we took some good swings, but we have to serve tougher to have sustained success in this conference."
The St. Cloud State volleyball team keeps the home stand going and hosts Minnesota State (9-7, 3-5 NSIC) on Saturday, Oct. 7, at 11 a.m.
