#6 St. Cloud State men's hockey sweeps Denver with 6-2 win on Dec. 12

Denver, Colo. - The #6 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (14-4-0, 8-2-0 NCHC) scored another NCHC sweep thanks to a convincing 6-2 victory at #11/12 University of Denver (7-7-2, 3-4-1 NCHC) on Saturday, Dec. 12 at Magness Arena in Denver, Colo. Â
This marked SCSU's fifth weekend sweep of the 2015-16 season and it was also the first time the Huskies have swept the Pioneers in Denver since a 6-4, 6-2 sweep on Nov. 29-30, 1997.
SCSU opened the game at 3:58 of the first period with a goal by Joey Benik, who was assisted on the play by Ethan Prow and David Morley. Â Denver rallied to tie the contest at 1-1 with a power play goal by Gabe Levin at 15:16 of the first period.
In the second period, SCSU took control of the match with a goal by Kalle Kossila at :42. Â Will Borgen and Jimmy Murray each had assists on the play. Â Just 35 second later, Benik posted the game winner at 1:17 of the second with assists from Patrick Newell and Jon Lizotte. Â Benik now leads the nation's Division I players with five game winners this season.
To cap the second period, Kossila scored his second goal of the night at 11:57. Â Assists were scored on the play by Murray and Prow, who now leads all DI blueliners with 15 assists this season and ranks second among DI defenders with a scoring rate of 1.21 ppg.
SCSU took the upper hand in the third period with a goal by Daniel Tedesco at 3:21 that gave the Huskies a 5-2 lead. Â Assists were added on the play by Murray and Jimmy Schuldt. Â Murray finished his game with a career-high three assists.
Denver's Grant Arnold's goal at 8:25 of the third period made it 5-2 before Kossila ended the night with his third goal at 13:37 of the third. Â Assists on the play were carded by Mikey Essyimont and Patrick Russell. Â This was Kossila's second career hat trick and his first since hitting three against Omaha on Feb. 1, 2014. Â
On the night, SCSU outshot the Pioneers 31-29. Â Denver was 1-2 on the power play, while the Huskies were 0-2 on the power play. Â In the nets, Charlie Lindgren scored his 13th win of the season with 27 saves. Â Evan Cowley was the goalie of record in the game for DU with eight saves in 21:17 minutes of play.Tanner Jaillet made 13 saves in relief of Cowley and Greg Ogard had four saves in the final 16:39 of play.
The Huskies will continue their 2015-16 season on Jan. 1-2 with a pair of home dates against Arizona State University.
