St. Cloud, Minn. – Eric Rud was introduced as the St. Cloud State head women's hockey coach at a press conference held today at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.
"It is my privilege to welcome back to St. Cloud State University our new head women's hockey coach Eric Rud," said Director of Athletics Heather Weems.
Rud was an assistant Huskies men's hockey coach from 2005 to 2010 and was an assistant men's coach at Colorado College since 2011. He also spent one season as the head coach and general manager of the USHL's Green Bay Gamblers in 2010-11.
"I want to thank Heather, the search committee and President Potter for giving me this opportunity," said Rud. "I am excited to get started here."
Weems spoke of the qualities that set Rud apart from a very strong pool of candidates. "Eric has proven his ability to successfully recruit to St. Cloud State," commented Weems. "He has demonstrated himself to be a true teacher of the game. Eric is admired and respected by all as a consummate teacher and a coach that can bring the best out his players. He cares greatly about students on and off the ice."
"I want to say how fortunate I feel to be able to come back to coach and teach at a university that I really enjoyed working at," said Rud. "St. Cloud State is a great place to coach. It's a great place for our student-athletes to excel academically and athletically. There has always been plenty of support for our student-athletes."
This is a coming home of sorts for Rud and his family. A native of Inver Grove Heights, Minn., Rud attended Simley High School. His wife Amy and children, Sam, Gabbie and Max, and other family members joined him at the press conference.
"It is such a great honor to come back to the state of hockey, to become a Division I head coach in a beautiful facility to recruit to and play in, and play in the best conference for women's hockey in the country."
