Huskies Travel to #1 Minnesota to Open WCHA Playoffs

St. Cloud, Minn. - St. Cloud State women's hockey is set to travel to Minneapolis for a best of three series against #1 Minnesota Feb. 28-Mar. 2 to open the WCHA Playoffs. Game times are set for 7:07 p.m. Friday and 4:07 p.m. Saturday and Sunday from Ridder Arena.
THE RECORD: The Huskies compiled a 4-25-5 overall record and a 3-21-4-2 regular season record good for 15 points in the ever-grueling WCHA coming into their series against the Gophers. In the tournament St. Cloud is the #8 seed while Minnesota holds the #1 seed.
LAST TIME OUT: The Huskies ended their final regular season series this past weekend as they hosted Bemidji State in the Herb Brooks National hockey Center. St. Cloud and Bemidji skated to a 1-1 tie in overtime on Friday with BSU taking the shootout 1-0 over the Huskies. On Saturday, it was all Bemidji as they shutout St. Cloud 3-0 in the regular season finale. Scoring the Huskies sole goal of the weekend was senior Julia Gilbert to take an early 1-0 lead was at the 3:27 mark of the first period in game one. Assisting Gilbert on the goal was junior Audrey Hanmer and senior Michelle Burke. The Huskies held on to that lead going into the first intermission and led Bemidji State in shots on goal 14-to-9. St. Cloud was unable to get a bounce or anything Saturday as they had four reviews that were not overturned in their favor. The Huskies outshot the Beavers in the second period though by a margin of 14-to-6 as they played with some tenacity on the ice. Bemidji State went on to win Saturday 3-0. Earning back-to-back starts and goalie of record for the Huskies this past weekend against Bemidji State was junior Julie Friend posting a total 61 saves. Friend ends the 2013-14 regular season, holding a 3-16-4 record as the Huskies mainstay netminder. Saturday's game was designated as Senior Day where the Huskies recognized the hard work and dedication of their 2014 senior class. This year's seven seniors included Sydney Burghardt, Michelle Burke, Cari Coen, Julia Gilbert, Amanda Monkman, Molli Mott and Amy Olson.

All-Time Series: Looking into the weekend at the Huskies match-up against Minnesota, the Gophers lead the all-time series with a 59-3-2 record that dates back to Jan. 9, 1999.
Ranking: The Gophers are currently ranked first in the WCHA ranking with 79 points. In national polls Minnesota is ranked #1 in both the USCHO poll and in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll.
Gophers' Leaders: Minnesota is led by sophomore forward Hanna Brandt with 55 points. Brandt has totaled 19 goals and 36 assists in 34 games played this season. She is also the league-scoring leader with 1.62 points per game. Junior forward Rachael Bona with 52 points including 20 goals and 32 assists in 34 games played follows Brandt. Between the pipes, sophomore Amanda Leveille leads the Gophers as she holds a 32-1-1 record. Leveille holds a .951 save percentage (697 svs, 733 shots faced) and has posted 13 shutout games this season.
PREVIOUS MEETINGS: When the teams met earlier this season in St. Cloud on Nov. 8-9, Minnesota earned the series sweep, 4-1 and 4-3. SCSU gave Minnesota everything they could handle in game two as they led 2-0 after the first period. It came down to the final two minutes of the third period when Minnesota came back to tie the game up 3-3 at the 17:58 mark and then took a 4-3 lead with just over a minute left for the win. The Huskies have not had a win against the Gophers since Feb. 13, 2010, where SCSU won 6-3 at home so they are looking to change their fate this weekend.
