The St. Cloud State Huskies Shutout #9 Ranked Beavers 3-0
12/13/2014 5:53:00 PM | Women's Hockey
St. Cloud, Minn. --- The St. Cloud State Huskies (6-15-1, 3-10-1 WCHA) shutout the #9 ranked Bemidji State Beavers (11-6-1, 7-6-1 WCHA) 3-0 on Saturday, Dec. 13, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. They end 2014 on a high note, marking their third WCHA win of the season.
The game came out scoreless in the first period and sent the teams tied 0-0 going into the second. The first goal came just over half way through the second, when Jenna Redford threw the puck on net, starting a scrum that Amanda Arbogast was there to finish. Redford got her second assist of the season, and Lexi Slattery, her third, as she was awarded the second assist on the goal. This marks Arbogast's fourth goal of the season, making her one of the team leaders in goals.
The Huskies went into the third with a one goal lead and momentum in their favor. Both teams were put in the box just 7:57 into the third, after Audrey Hanmer and Kayleigh Chapman, of Bemidji, took matching roughing penalties, taking the play down to 4-on-4. Kalli Funk joined Hanmer in the box for a high sticking penalty, forcing the Huskies on a 4-on-3. As the roughing penalties expired, Hanmer came out of the box to pick up the loose puck in the neutral zone, sending herself on a breakaway, where she capitalized to extend the lead 2-0 with 10:17 to play in the game.
With 1:33 left in the contest, Bemidji State pulled their goalie in the effort to put one past the Huskies. SCSU was not phased, as they got it out, giving Lauren Hespenheide the chance to put the puck into the empty net, to go up 3-0 and solidify their win.
St. Cloud State's junior goaltender, Katie Fitzgerald, earned her second shutout of not only the season, but her career. She faced 34 shots on net in 60 minutes of play, moving her record to 2-9-1 on the season.
The Huskies will start 2015 off with a home series against Ohio State, on Jan. 9-10. Both games will be played at 3:07.
