St. Cloud, Minn. - The St. Cloud State University women's hockey head coach Jeff Giesen announced today that Shera Fetter will be joining the Huskies this season as the team's new assistant coach.Â
Fetter, who is originally from Thunder Bay, Ontario, is the former head coach at Stevenson University (Md.) where she started a Division III women's hockey program in 2011.Â
In Fetter's first season, she spent recruiting her team compiling a group of 25 freshman athletes. The program's first season in 2012-13, Stevenson finished with a 6-15-1 overall record and charted the programs first win on October 27, 2012 with a 4-1 victory over Buffalo State.
Before becoming the head coach at Stevenson University, Fetter was an assistant coach at Elmira College. She spent two seasons as an assistant coach and head junior varsity coach from 2009-11. During that time, the Soaring Eagles had a record of 40-13-3 and won the 2010 ECAC West Championship.
The Soaring Eagles are the only program in NCAA history, in all sports, to start a sport and win a national championship in the same year. Elmira won the 2002 and 2003 NCAA Division III Women's Ice Hockey Championship as well as back-to-back ECAC West titles, totaling a two-year record of 49-5-3.
During her college years, Fetter was a four-year letter winner at Minnesota State University Mankato. She played defense for the Mavericks from 2003-07. Fetter ranks eighth in school history with 136 career games played, totaling 48 points on 23 goals and 25 assists from 2003-07. She was a three-time scholar-athlete, team captain as a senior and recipient of the team's Most Improved Player Award in 2006. She was named to the WCHA All-Academic Team three years in a row and graduated Magna Cum Laude from Minnesota State.
Fetter also received the Tiffany Searles Award, given to the all-around student-athlete, the Daniel L. Mundahl Community Service Award and the Maverick Achievement Award for possessing a 3.5 GPA or higher.
A 2007 graduate of Minnesota State with a bachelor of science degree in physical education teaching, Fetter has served as an assistant girls' hockey coach for Mankato East High School, M.A.H.A. U10 and Northern Hawks AAA where she was responsible for the evaluation of players at tryouts, execution of practices, establishment of systematic on-ice play and coordinating on and off ice strength and conditioning training.
Fetter also has experience as a physical education teacher and has worked for M.A.H.A hockey camps and the Rick St. Croix Goalie School. While coaching at Elmira she also obtained her master's degree in education with a focus in general education.
"We are really excited to add Shera to our staff as she brings a wealth of knowledge and has a great background," said head coach Jeff Giesen. "Shera will be able to jump right in and work with our players and start recruiting as well."
